Kevin Heart managed what many other show hosts failed to do. A Jay-Z interview may be a hard one to pull but it’s not impossible.
In an exclusive preview of season 2 of Kevin Hart’s talk show “Hart to Heart,” the famous comedian sat down with Jay-Z and asked him whether he’s retired from music.
“Nah, I tried that. I’m terrible with that! I found something I’m terrible at,” Hov replied, referring to the time he famously claimed that “The Black Album” would be his final project. Jay explained that he announced his retirement in 2003 because he was tired of working 24/7 and believed he needed a break to maintain the artistic output he desired..
“I just needed a break,” he said. “I was really burnt out that time. I was releasing albums every year, 96, 97, 98… And in between that, soundtracks, other people’s albums, Rockefeller, touring, like back-to-back and you know, I just looked up one day and I was like, ‘I’m tired!’ I had never been on vacation until like 2000, like my whole life and I was just really burnt out at that moment.”
Now, after thirty years in the music industry, The New York icon claims that, while he does not want to stop creating music, he is unsure what the next chapter of his career will entail.
During his chat with Kevin Heart, Jay revealed that he is not currently working on anything specific but is willing to experiment and see where his creative mind may take him.
“I do not know what happens next. I am not actively making music or making an album or have plans to make an album, but I never want to say that I am retired,” he said. “It is a gift, so who am I to shut it off? And it may have a different form or interpretation. Maybe it is not an album, maybe it is. I have no idea, but I am just going to leave it open.”
